Let's dive into a topic that hits close to home for many of us: dealing with haters in the music industry.
Whether you're a budding songwriter, an established artist, or somewhere in between, you've probably encountered your fair share of negativity from critics, trolls, or just plain old jealous folks.
And you know, that's life.
No matter what you do, when you gather the courage to put yourself out there, there will always be those trolls who have nothing better to do than be plain mean.
But I'm here to share some battle-tested strategies to help you navigate this rocky terrain and come out on top.
And I got those battle strategies from Alex Hormozi.
He has a 20-minute video on YouTube where he gives you his ultimate Guide to dealing with haters. (Watch it here)
In case, you don't have 20 minutes, let's look at Hormozi's battle techniques, especially for you as the songwriter or the music artist:
It's painful when you pour your heart and soul into crafting the perfect song, only to have someone tear it apart with words sharper than a serrated knife.
It stings, doesn't it?
But here's the thing: haters gonna hate, no matter what you do.
So why waste precious energy dwelling on their negativity?
Instead, let's adopt a mindset of resilience and empowerment.
Battle Technique #1: IGNORE
One of the most effective ways to deal with haters is simply ignoring them.
Yep, you heard me right.
Ignore them like you would a pesky mosquito buzzing around your head.
By refusing to engage with their negativity, you're robbing them of the satisfaction they crave.
It's like denying oxygen to a fire – eventually, it fizzles out on its own.
Battle Technique #2: AGREE
But what if the criticism hits a little too close to home?
Maybe they're attacking your authenticity as an artist or accusing you of being a sellout.
In that case, it's time to deploy the art of agreement.
Just agree with them and when you're on the same side as they are, there's no conflict anymore. You've taken the wind out of their sails.
Battle Technique #3: AGREE +1
Flip the script on your haters by acknowledging their criticism and then one-upping them with a dose of self-deprecating humor.
Trust me, nothing disarms a hater faster than a well-timed joke at your own expense.
Just watch the movie "8 Mile" with Eminem. In the final rap battle scene, Rabbit takes all the ammunition from his battle rival and lists all the things he could have said against him. And he owns them!
That's what you could do as well.
Agree and then one-up them.
"The one thing that counters hate above everything else is HUMOR. And one of the all time funny things that you can do is make fun of yourself. And we should always be better at mocking ourselves than anyone else does. Because WE have more material."
Alex Hormozi
So find all the things adjacent to what they said, use them to agree with them, and attack yourself more viciously than they were.
And this will make you appear like a class act, more humble, and they will have nothing to say back.
They will look like the bad guy when you meet them with humor and the conflict will disappear.
The great thing about haters
Haters can actually be a blessing in disguise.
They're like a rite of passage for every successful artist.
As Winston Churchill once said:
"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life."
Winston Churchill
So wear those haters like a badge of honor, knowing they're a sign that you're doing something right.
In the end, remember this:
Your music is your voice, and no amount of negativity can silence it unless you let it.
So keep creating, keep pushing boundaries, and keep shining bright – because the world needs your music now more than ever.
Rock on!
