Overcoming Imposter Syndrome for Real

written by Melanie Naumann

One simple mindset hack can change your entire perception of how you see yourself!

What do you feel when you hear "imposter syndrome"?

A lot of people just feel they are not who they pretend to be.

This means they have forgotten the most important aspect of life itself.

→ It's all a journey.

So let me explain, there's this future version of you - someone you aspire to become.

You have this goal in mind … this place where you want to get to.

Maybe you want to sing like Rihanna, tell stories like Taylor Swift, or write songs like Bernie Taupin.

But when you look at your reality, you constantly feel like you’re not there yet.

No matter what you do trying to become that person, it all comes back to:

“I’m not there yet.”

I am not yet that person that I aspire to be.

I am not yet that good of a singer...

... so who am I to call myself one?

I am not yet that good of a songwriter...

... so who am I to call myself one?

I am not yet that good of a musician...

... so who am I to call myself one?

And thinking like this means we don’t give ourselves credit for everything we’ve already accomplished.

It's a matter of what we focus on.

If we focus on all the things we haven't achieved yet, we end up feeling like imposters because, in our own perception, we're not there yet.

That’s because we compare where we are to our goals and the people who have already reached them, so we don't feel like we've made it yet.

We are too focused on “not being there yet,” comparing ourselves to people who are further ahead… which prompts us to feel like imposters for what we do.

And that is a good thing.

Because we are aware of all the things we still have to master and learn – and that’s a good thing.

But don’t let it cripple you.

So while keeping your goals in mind, why not focus on the things you've already accomplished?

Just look back at the place where you started from, and compare it to the place where you are now.

You are so much further ahead than you give yourself credit for.

Too often, we see things in black and white. Either I'm IT, or I'm not.

But in everything we do, there’s not just a starting point and an end... there’s a journey in between at all kinds of levels.

So, the more we grow and learn, the more we will be aware of things we couldn’t have possibly known at the beginning, so we can always learn and grow.

There will always be things for which you have to build the skills to master them. There's always something that will make you feel like "You're not there yet."

Which is a beautiful thing.

There’s a devil at every level, as they say.

So I guess it’s better to embrace the journey, appreciate what you’ve already learnt and the skills you acquired, and then take action to learn and do some more

You are not an imposter.

You are on a journey.

So appreciate where you came from and where you are going.

You are on a journey.
