Song Ideas and Where To Find Them

written by Melanie Naumann

Ever find yourself staring at a blank page, wracking your brain for that perfect lyric, only to come up empty-handed?

Don't worry, you're not alone.

We've all been there, stuck in the rut of writer's block, searching for that elusive spark of inspiration.

But what if I told you that inspiration is all around you, just waiting to be discovered?

In today's blog post, we're going to dive into the art of finding inspiration for your song lyrics by thinking outside the box.

Now, before we get started, let's shake off the notion of traditional songwriting advice. Sure, object writing and people-watching can be valuable tools, but let's explore something different.

What already resonates with you?

Let's tap into what truly interests you – the books you can't put down, the movies that leave you breathless, the songs that resonate deep within your soul.

Think about it. What are the common themes between your favorite books, movies, and songs?

Is there a particular genre, theme, core human need, challenge, desire ... that speaks to you?

Perhaps there's a recurring motif that captures your imagination and that you catch yourself thinking about... longing for ... or find yourself exploring over and over again.

Whatever it may be, use it as a springboard for your songwriting journey.... and write about those things that ALREADY interest you! Because they are ALREADY irresistible to you which means: it will keep you motivated when things get tough.

But inspiration isn't just limited to entertainment.

What life story is waiting to be told?

Consider the biggest moments in your life – the triumphs, the heartaches, the moments of pure joy, the losses, the sacrifices, the crossroad moments.

What stories are waiting to be told?

What emotions are begging to be expressed?

And don't forget to look beyond your own experiences.

Explore the world around you – the beauty of nature, the hustle and bustle of city life, the complexities of human relationships.

Each moment holds a story waiting to be told, a lyric waiting to be written.

Take a Stand for/against something.

And one more thing ... one more possible source of inspiration is thinking about what you would take a stand for/against.

What is something you're passionate about, something you'd fight for with every fiber of your being?

It could be social justice, environmental conservation, or simply spreading love and kindness in a world that often feels divided.

Whatever it is, let that passion infuse your lyrics with purpose and meaning.

Because, you know, when you take a stand for something in your songwriting, you're not just writing words to some music – you're sending a message, sparking a conversation, perhaps even igniting change.

Your lyrics have the power to inspire, to challenge, to unite.

So don't be afraid to speak your truth, to stand up for what you believe in, even if it's controversial or unconventional.

Remember, the greatest songs are often the ones that come from the heart, that tap into something real and raw.

So go ahead, take a stand, and let your voice be heard through your music.

Who knows? You might just change the world.

So, the next time you find yourself stuck in a creative rut, remember this: inspiration is everywhere.

All you have to do is open your eyes, open your heart, and let it flow.
